Its goal is to provide readers with background and coverage of the crucial Midwest battleground in the months leading up to the 2008 presidential election. Several of the states involved were key to the 2004 campaign strategies of George W. Bush and John Kerry and the region is again expected to be a frequent stopping point for the eventual '08 nominees. Already, Iowa and Michigan have proven to be important waypoints in the race to this year's nomination, and the next six weeks will see the other states hold their own contests.
